Horimiya by HERO & Daisuke Hagiwara

Horimiya by HERO (Story) & Daisuke Hagiwara (Art)

My category: School Comedy Romance

Ongoing. 2 volumes, 17 chapters scanlated.

Summary: Kyouko Hori is a smart, pretty and friendly girl who due to her workaholic parents, has been taking care of her younger brother and housework since she was small. Hori cooks, cleans, buys groceries and pretty much raises her brother on her own. She hides this housewife-like side of her from her school friends. Izumi Miyamura on the other hand, seems like a bookworm and an otaku in school, but in truth has many piercings and tattoos and is friendly outside of school. Due to Hori's brother Souta, they discover the different side to each other and slowly got to know each other.

Overall, 8/10.

Story: 8/10

It's a school romance shoujo manga. It doesn't really have a storyline, but the relationships all develop nicely, at a good pace. As it's still being published and is quite new, the story isn't fit to be judged yet. So far though, I like how this is going, how things develop between Hori and Miyamura. It's a light read, no soul-deep epiphanies nor is it unrealistic fluff. It's a genuine story about first love between two teenagers, with all the worrying, the little touches and gestures, the blushing, the hits and the misses that come with it. There's also a lot of funny moments in Horimiya, some that make you really laugh out loud.

p.s. there is an earlier, alternate version of Horimiya called Hori-san to Miyamura-kun, apparently it's like a 4 panel manga, with 140 chapters in total. No one has scanlated that though.

Character: 9/10

The characters are what drive Horimiya and makes it so fun. Hori is believable, and her personality is lovable--she's nice, friendly, hardworking, but also has a motherly and slightly sadistic side. Miyamura is awkward, ditzy, sweet, gentlemanly but also can be extremely violent and talk not-so-nicely, and is sometimes very lonely. I think Miyamura is one of my favourite pretty boys; he looks like Yamato from Say I Love You, but has an adorable and quirky personality I really like. You just tend to fall in love with him. The other side characters are still quite undeveloped, especially Yuki but Tooru and Souta are really likable.

Art: 7/10

The art is simple and clean, without much decoration. I think it suits the story quite well, and the simple backgrounds, and sometimes lack of it isn't jarring or out of place. Character emotions and gestures are also expressed well, and the composition is nice. Only I find it a little weird that Hori's hair isn't inked/toned even though she appears to have dark brown hair on covers. HERO and Daisuke Hagiwara are pretty new mangaka from what I know, and their style in Horimiya is very modern, both art and story.

Enjoyment: 9/10

I really enjoyed Horimiya so much! It had romantic moments that make you smile, comedic moments that make you laugh, and reading it just made me feel warm inside. Definitely going to read this again, and highly recommended for anyone looking for a good light romance.

Overall, 8/10.
